Reincarnations of Hindu Deities, Or Children Born With Birth Defects?

What is this nonsensical BS with people (large groups of people) believing that some children who have birth defects are reincarnations of gods & goddesses?

Lakshmi Tatma was born with four arms and four legs & is thought to be the reincarnation of the Hindu goddess Lakshmi, who is a deity of wealth & good fortune. What? Really? Are they serious?

As it turns out her extra limbs are not actually her own, but those of her parasitic, headless twin sister which they had to remove in order that she live past adolescence. Did they realize that she was a goddess when a traveling circus offered to buy her? Or was it when they discovered that half of her body was really a headless parasite?

Lali Singh, born with two faces from a condition called craniofacial duplication - & voila!!! Here's your goddess Durga. Others believe that she is either the elephant-headed god Ganesha, or again, the goddess Lakshmi. But wait a minute - wasn't the Lakshmi spot already taken? Guess not. And, yes.

Lali's father, Jaipal Singh, says "She has brought fame to our village," surely getting down to the very essence of what Durga has come back to Earth to do: to bring fame to the village... & it would be nice if she would also destroy demons.

I have a little theory of my own as to how this unspoken tradition of dubbing deformed babies as deities could have come about in India to begin with. In poor countries it's not so feasible as it is in the U.S. to care for children with deformities or learning disabilities. I'm willing to bet that it was EVEN LESS SO at the time these deities were being established. Mommies love their babies, right? Right. So when the crew doesn't like what this new person requires, well then it's time for Mama to tell said crew about how in the middle of the night you were levitating, glowing with beams of lights; and that you have arisen this morning victorious over all the servants of the underworld as was announced with the alignment of Jupiter & The Moon.

Now I'm not in any way suggesting that I personally do not believe in the occurrence of reincarnation, because I do. But I even more strongly believe in the occurrence of dumb-dumbs.
